I fall in love so easily, but this is “the One”. Complex yet simple, constantly changing and growing, a good sense of humor, loves Monty Python, never walks away from an argument, I could go on. You may have guessed, code is my love. We may be in the honeymoon phase, but the last time I felt like this was when I exited customs at the Eurostar station in Waterloo into the warm embrace of my waiting friend. In that embrace I knew I had come home, I had traveled over 5,600 miles to find it, but I was definitely home. Twentyfour years later my friend and I are close to celebrating our Silver wedding anniversary. I’ve come to code later than most but sometimes you have to travel a ways to find what you’re looking for.
I’ve had the privilege of learning a lot of different skills throughout my working life, from artisan baking to silversmithing. I couldn’t possibly list them all here, but a few self truths have emerged from these experiences, starting with this.
Curiosity unfurls the world in all its beauty and ferocity every time you ask a question or seek to know how something works.
I’m a restless soul and must be working at a challenge, unless I’m sleeping.
When you find a thing that consumes you, dive in with gratitude.
Everyone starts somewhere, you don’t have to have all the answers but look them up anyway.
One-man bands generally suck. If you have an opportunity to collaborate, take it!
If I can make it beautiful, I will.
When I learned CSS and Flexbox with Codenation I found the graphics and effects I could render to the page limitless, having only worked in WordPress previously, the control of writing my own code is great. I can happily get lost in CSS, and HTML, perfecting every visual element of the page, yet I is still thirst to reach the back end and utilize all those elements. Learning the structure and methods of Python has allowed me to pick up the basics of other coding languages like Javascript and React more easily and I can’t wait to learn more!
